Bahasa Indonesia

For one of my creativity activity, I decided to learn Indonesian as I realized the need of improving the level of the language of the country which I live in. The teacher is a native Indonesian speaker and she visits my place for an one-to-one lesson of one and half hour each lesson. The lesson was flexible. At times she brought past IB Indonesian exam papers, and on contrast, it was a free talk session in Indonesian at times.

This activity impacted me in that I gained the skills of Indonesian language through the the flexible lessons. I learned a lot about the difficulties in Indonesian idioms and grammars. In addition, it also allowed to experience how to interact with an purely Indonesian individuals, as their culture was different to ours. I believe I can apply what I’ve learned in this activity to other life situations because I now have the basics of the Indonesian language. It was an amazing experience and I’m proud to say that this activity is a valid CAS activity.

SIS IB Booklet

For one of my creativity activity, I collaborated with one of my classmate and made a brochure for the IB programme for the school. The school is a newly registered IB school, people have less knolwedge about the program. The school provided us with what to include in the booklet, and our role was to compile all the resources and make one booklet. The final product is shown above in the form of booklet.

This activity impacted me in that I gained the skills of communicating with others. Because it was new thing for me and my classmate, at first the activity didnt run smooth. However, this gave us an experience and taught us how to be responsible for the work given from the school, and the responsibility to represent the school using our school logo. It was an amazing experience and I’m proud to say that this activity is a valid CAS activity.

Job experience at Mercure Hotel

For our job experience activity, I went to Mercure Hotel Simatupang. We get no pay for the labour thus it is a valid service activity. Waking up at early morning before the hotel starts operation, we gathered in the staff lobby, and met our boss for the week.

The activity started at 8:00 and ended at 6:00. The activity was asking for volunteers through their website and social media, thus many other students from different schools came, and Ive made new friends.

This activity impacted me in that It made me think of growing up and having an occupation, and the importance of helping each others such as this activity. Although waking up early in the morning and the activity for a week was not as easy as expected, I have leanred that it is satisfying to help the community that I live in. If I have the opportunity to  volunteer in a similar event in the future, I would choose wisely because my future job has a different direction.

Teaching Japanese (Assistant)

For one of my service and creativity activity, I volunteered to act as an English-Japanese translator as I realized there was an English speaking student wanting to learn Japanese from a native Japanese speaker who is not fluent in speaking English. They have had accepted my approach for volunteering. Since then, the lesson was between the 3 of us. The teacher, the student, and the translator as an assistant.

The student had interacted with the Japanese culture such as the origami through learning the language and I believe my support was useful for the student. Although I knew my role will be no longer needed as the student and the teacher gains the know-how of communication, I felt satisfied as i had the feeling that i had became a help for someone.

This activity impacted me in that I gained skills of through the through the numbers of lessons. I learned a lot about the difficulties in translating idioms of a language to another language. I believe I can apply what I’ve learned in this activity to other life situations because I now know how it is satisfying to help someone and at the same time to learn something new. If i were to volunteer in the same situation in the future, It would be a lot easier as I have the know-how and skills, and I will be aware of the responsibility. It was an amazing experience and I’m proud to say that this activity is a valid CAS activity.

Clean up Jakarta 2015

For one of my service activity, I got invloved in the clean up Jakarta activity as I realized they were looking for members to volunteer. More volunteers are favorable; therfore, we went there as a class. Waking up at early morning before the sun sets, we gathered in Gelora Bung Karno Stadium and met out team leader, who is responsible for the activity at that clean up site.

The most unusual trash Ive picked up was a old handphone that no longer worked. The activity was asking for volunteers through their website and social media, thus many other students from different schools came to that site, and Ive made new friends. After weve worked for nealry three hours, our team leader decided to end the activity for that week. We gathered the bags of trashes at one point and we took a group photo.

This activity impacted me in that It made me think of the global issues of trashes, and the importance of ethical activities such as this activity. Although waking up early in the morning and the activity for three hours was not as easy as expected, I have leanred that it is satisfying to help the community that I live in and get engaged with issues of global importance. If I have the opportunity to  volunteer in a similar event in the future, I would not hesitate to join as this activity leadsto both personal satisfaction and a benefit to the community. Keeping Jakarta clean is the same thing as keeping our home clean. It was an amazing experience and I realize that I love the city of Jakarta.

Language day performance

As one of my creativity activity, I performed on stage on one of the days of the language week.

The activity was a quiz show and i was one of the answerer. My partner had to act out what the word is and my role was to guess what my partner what trying to act our without knowing the word. We got 2nd place our of 4 groups.

This activity impacted me in that i have gained confidence to get up there on the stage. I learned a lot about the difficulties and pressures of getting up there by thinking about the failures that i maight make. I believe I can apply what I’ve experinced because I am sure that there will be situations where I will be forced to get up and do something in front of poeple. This activity allowed me to prepare for those upcoming situations.  I would like to thank my partner who gave much of his effort so the performance will end up in a success

Futsal

For one of my action activity, together with friends, we have made a team for futsal. It started from only 6 members but at the moment having 13. Once in 2 weeks, there is a practice on sundays, and we share the fees for renting the futsal court by the number who came to the practice. Being the seniors of the school, we had not many chances to exercise, thus many wanted to participate in the practices.

As i have mentioned, the activity is at a court outside school, but near the school. As we had continued to play, we became friends with other futsal teams that borrow the same court, and once in few weeks, we had spar-rings. Many, including myself had an experience in playing futsal, so we were quite strong as a team, and the practices improved our combination and team work.As we became stronger, now we got to knwo more teams that were wiling to play with us.That enlarged the circle and it provided me with a lot of joy. We had the difficulties paying for the court every hour, but it was solved as there were more and more people; more people means more people to divide the rent, thus cheaper for each one of us. We made alot of new friends.

This activity impacted me in a positive way. I gained skills of futsal, communicating, collaborating, planning, and many more. Although at first we had difficulties such as not enough players to play, with, the burden of rent fee, the balance between studies and sports, as time passed i was able to overcome those. As i have mentioned, the fee problem was solved, our academic schedule wasnt that tight when we were playing, and last but not the least, made more new friends, allowing me to realize the power and way of socializing. I would like to continue this even after CAS is all done. This activity will sure be useful in the future as the population of this sport worldwide is enormous, it is a sport that i can play in almost wherever i am and make new friends.

SIS Musical opening act

SIS musical, as its name suggests, it is a once in two years musical show that SIS students act out. As one of my creativity activity, I performed on the opening act of the SIS musical.

The performance was dance to "dangdut", Indonesian traditional music enjoyed by ordinary households. The dance moves are very comical, juxtaposing with the extremely formal outfit that we had. Its aim was to seek laughter of the audience before the act ends, and to embody the traditional culture/music of Indonesia.

This activity impacted me in that I gained skills on dancing on the dangdur music, interpreting and embodying the traditional music of Indonesia, and gained confidence of getting up the stage. I learned a lot about the difficulties in remembering those dance moves becasue i am completely new to those moves thats in the Indonesian culture. In addition to that, I had difficulities in collaborating with ohters to synchronoze our moves as it was a group performace. Those difficulities were solved by large hours of practices.I believe the undertanding for the Indonesian culture i have now is way more compared to what i had before, If i were to volunteer in the same situation in the future, It would be a lot easier as I have the know-how and skills, and I will be aware of the responsibility.

Tennis Lesson

For my action activity, I decided to learn tennis from a private coach and so that I can play a friendly match with some of my classmates who play tennis. Fortunately, one of my friend had introduced me his coach with a reasonable lesson fee. My final goal for this activity is to participate in a tennis tournament.

This activity is certainly out of school. Once a week, one to one lesson with my coach, who was once a professional tennis player and now working as a coach. I had experience in tennis when i was young, but it made no difference; I couldn't hit the ball properly for the first few weeks. At first the ball rarely landed inside the court, but as time flew, i got the hang of it and started stroking balls back with a top-spin. I thought of quitting at first but as i got better at it, the activity provided me with a lot of joy. The difficulty was solved by the satisfaction of getting better lesson per lesson. I also played with my friends after school in a court nearby school and improved my skills there too.

This activity impacted me in a positive way. I gained skills of tennis through a lot of failures, losing number of balls by hitting it over the fence. Although it had certain difficulties such as the coach is late, frequently absent, i had to balance between my studies and sports, this activity was sensational to me. Unlike when i was young, i am now more aware of things and i noticed that tennis is fun when you put 100% effort in it. I would like to continue this even after CAS is all done. This activity will sure be useful in the future as the population of this sports worldwide is enormous, it is a sport that i can play in almost wherever i am. As an example, i was surprised that almost half of my classmates had experience in playing tennis

SIS Olympics

SIS Olympics is a sports event held by the SIS group of schools once a year. As one of my action and service activity, I became one the competitors in few sports and also volunteered as a coach for lower divisions. Our school is a relatively small school compared to other SIS schools, meaning almost everyone in our class had to participate. Although the events are all planned by the school, for the practices, students made their own schedules considering when to use the court, when are the students  free, etc... As a senior of the school, we had the responsibility to get the practices going. I competed in various events including futsal, basketball, volleyball, track, pingpong, etc... and I coached futsal for the younger divisions.

The practices went out well following the schedule made. Early morning before the school bell, break times and after school times. We wanted to win, so we joined as much practices we can, and in addition to that, volunteered for coaching so it was pretty much time consuming and a burden for 12 graders as studies are a burden as well. The balancing of time between practices/coaching and academics soon became a problem. Our teachers solved that problem by implementing new rules that students are not allowed stay at school after the 5 pm. That gave us the time to study. Practices each day made us a team, and a building confidence each day.

The events were held for 4 consecutive days meaning we had to skip classes but no one made any complains as the school was highly motivated. Day 1 futsal and pingpong. 2nd place in futsal. The division that i had coached got 1st place. Day 2 Basket ball. 1st place. Day 3 volleyball. Day 4 100m x 4 relay. 1st place. In those days taking photos of the events, collaborating with others in the sis magazine committee.

This activity impacted me in that I gained various skills and experience of sports (some of the sports were new to me), coaching, and making schedules for practices. Time management, initiative to make plans and o follow it, stronger and firm teamwork and relationships, (not only in those sports but while planning schedules) with classmates and juniors, I believe I can apply what I’ve learned in this whole event to other life situations because I now know how it satisfying to help someone and at the same time to achieve something in a competition. If i were to participate in a similar event in the future, I wouldn't be reluctant to join because i know how these events lead to personal growth, working collaboratively with comrades. I will know what to be careful of. It is the planning process. When the planning is excellent, there would be now worries of the event to be a burden. It was and it will always be an amazing experience; representing my beloved school and the joy to share this memorable experience with the squad which leads to everyone of us's growth.

Photographer for the SIS magazine

As one of my service and creativity activity, I volunteered to help the SIS magazine committee as I realized they were lacking members and were looking for students willing to help. Fortunately, my father had a collection of cameras, and was willing to lend them as long as I took good care of them. The committee had accepted my approach for volunteering and briefly explained what they were requiring for the photos. They asked for photos of students participating and the photo of what the activities are about.

Out of the 5 activities I participated, the most memorable activity was the trip to Bandung, to a geothermal power station. The activity was designed for science students who conducted research on the power-plant itself and the natural environment of the huge area needed for the geothermal power station. Students were shown the pipes which carried hot steams, fusion reactors that produced energy, deer that lived nearby, fungus that were found in the walls of the power-plant, and may more objects to research. While that was happening, I looked for opportunities to take photos and at the same time took notes of what the engineer was explaining. That difficulty was solved because I wasn't the only photographer that went to the trip.

This activity impacted me in that I gained skills of photography through the numerous failed photos that weren't used for the magazine. I learned a lot about the difficulties in taking photos of students at places I am also supposed to listen to the lecturer. I believe I can apply what I’ve learned in this photography to other life situations because I now know how it satisfying to help someone and at the same time to learn something new. If i were to volunteer in the same situation in the future, It would be a lot easier as I have the know-how and skills, and I will be aware of the responsibility. The only thing I might change is that if I am alone, I shouldn’t participate as a volunteer where I am supposed to be learning along. It was an amazing experience and I’m proud to call myself a photographer and a member of the SIS magazine committee.
